In August 2009 Mobile Banking was starting to make huge inroads in Nigeria. M-Pesa was becoming wildly successful in the very populous Nigera. Safricom was said to have had over 6 million registered users in Kenya, and Equity bank had over 3 million account holders.
Mobile Banking was not nearly as successful in Tanzania. This was, it was believed at the time, due in part to the low population density and the further distances to travel between towns and villages.
